Discovering What Is Possible: Growing Leadership Through Challenge

When one of our Kaiako Laura, returned from a 21-day Outward Bound scholarship, she brought back far more than stories of sailing, tramping, kayaking and camping in the wilderness. She returned with a deeper understanding of herself, increased confidence in her ability to lead through uncertainty, and a renewed belief that growth often happens in the places where comfort ends.

Awarded through the New Horizons for Women Trust after the opportunity was shared through a Te Rito Maioha network, the programme challenged Laura physically, mentally and emotionally. From navigating remote environments and living without technology, to leading teams through unfamiliar situations, every experience required courage, resilience, adaptability and collaboration. These are the same capabilities that support high-quality teaching, strong relationships and effective leadership across our organisation.

What stands out most is not the challenges Laura overcame, but the growth they inspired. Through intensive shared experiences, solo reflection time, and opportunities to both lead and be led, she strengthened skills in communication, planning, perseverance, flexibility and understanding different perspectives. These experiences help build the kind of reflective, capable and confident kaimahi who contribute positively to their teams, tamariki and whānau every day.

Laura's journey also highlights the importance of investing in opportunities that develop people beyond their immediate roles. When our kaimahi are supported to learn, challenge themselves and expand their horizons, the benefits flow throughout the Association. We build stronger leaders, deepen wellbeing, strengthen professional capability and foster a culture where lifelong learning is valued and encouraged.

One of Laura's greatest insights was recognising how often we underestimate what we are capable of achieving. By creating pathways for growth, whether through professional learning, scholarship opportunities or new experiences, we empower our people to bring their best selves to their work and to the communities they serve.

Laura's Outward Bound experience is a reminder that investing in people creates impact far beyond the individual. As they grow in confidence, resilience and leadership, so too does our collective ability to our communities.

If an opportunity presents itself, take it. Your comfort zone has never been where your potential lives!
