Nga Mihi Mahana Kia Koutou - A Warm Welcome to Everyone

Oaktree Kindergarten is situated in Browns Bay. We are a public early childhood educational service and offer a high quality educational programme for 3-5 year olds. At Oaktree Kindergarten we have an open door policy and welcome families/whanau in for a visit.

We look forward to getting to know you and your child.

Our Philosophy

At Oaktree Kindergarten our practice is underpinned by the founding principles of Te Whariki, the Early Childhood Curriculum guidelines for Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Relationships – Nga Hononga

We believe that authentic, meaningful and reciprocal relationships between teachers (kaiako), children (tamariki), families (whanau) and the wider community are an integral basis for teaching and learning. We embrace respect, understanding, open communication, honesty, harmony and integrity. These values underpin our role as teachers within our learning community.

Empowerment – Whakamana

We aim to provide a beautiful, joyful and stimulating environment that nurtures and empowers children to become confident, capable learners. We value children as actively contributing members of our learning community. All children are supported to learn with and alongside their peers, teachers and other adults to become socially competent citizens.

Our environment reflects the uniqueness of Aotearoa New Zealand. We strive to provide a natural environment that supports environmentally sustainable practices and entices children’s natural curiosity and desire to explore.

Holistic Development – Kotahitanga

We believe that children learn best through a play-based curriculum that provides opportunities for discovery, wonder, exploration and interaction. We are skilled practitioners who support children’s developing working theories, emergent literacy and numeracy development within a social context. We use conversations and provocations to extend and enrich each child’s learning journey.

Family and Community – Whanau Tangata

We recognise that children’s learning and development extends beyond the walls of our kindergarten. We value the contributions from parents, whānau, fellow teachers and the wider community. We acknowledge that these contributions help to shape our curriculum and together, create a community of learners.

We recognize the Treaty of Waitangi as a living and relevant document and the unique place of Maori as tangata whenua of Aotearoa New Zealand. We are committed to working in partnership with tangata whenua to develop our knowledge of Maori language and culture/Te Reo, and incorporate these principles as an integral part of our curriculum.

We celebrate the diverse make-up of our kindergarten community, and strive to reflect this in our environment and practices. Every person, irrespective of ability, gender and cultural background, is warmly welcomed here. Oaktree Kindergarten is a place where a sense of belonging and security is fostered for all.
